Over the last 3 years, our office has made it so that high school counselors and teachers can submit their evaluation/recommendation forms online. As you would probably guess, it started off slow the first year, but it has been gaining traction ever since, with great growth this year! Having these forms come into our office online helps in matching up the materials to the students (it happens overnight in a large batch job), eliminates the delay of the mail, means fewer issues with illegible writing, and lessens the items we must open, scan and match up with applicants. In addition, it allows schools to save general academic information for the school in the UGA database (and not write it out again and again), cuts down on postage, and lessens the phone calls from panicked families. So far this year, we have received over 10,000 online school evaluations (this includes Early Action and Regular Decision applicants, along with a few who have not applied yet but the form is in)! Before delving into Vivian’s relationships and their impact on her â€Å"sick experience,† her character must first be analyzed from the point of view of how Vivian views herself. Ever since a young age, Vivian was exposed to reading literature. Mr. Bearing, Vivian’s father, encouraged her to continue reading more books, to which she replied, â€Å"I think I’ll readThe Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies† (Edson, 41.) While she read the book, her father would help her sound out the words that she had trouble reading. He said, â€Å"now use it in a sentence. What has a soporific effect on you?† (Edson, 42.) This scenario of significance because it illustrates the deep learning that Vivian was exposed to from an early age and most likely provoked her interest in deciphering the meaning of words. Vivian goes on to become one of the top professors in her field and when she gets admitted to the hospital, she boasts about her accomplishments to the technici ans. She says, â€Å"I have made an immeasurable contribution to the discipline..I am a force† (Edson, 17.) It appears that concentrating on her achievements took her mind off of the harsh reality of her diagnosis. It may be that constantly reiterating her accomplishments made her feel stronger, propelling her to further accept the fate of her diagnosis and subsequent treatment. The power of language is explored extensively in this play, giving readers a glimpse into how Vivians understanding of the sonnets of Donne helps her to make sense of her extremely gruesome and terminal diagnosis. Vivian uses her exposure to Donnes sonnets as a means to transcend the boundaries and understand her diagnosis in a deep way. In fact, she relies very heavily on her knowledge and education when she is first diagnosed. Vivian’s positive mentality toward herself and her accomplishments funneled into a unique relationship with her doctor, Jason Posner. Upon their first interaction, we learn that Jason was in her class as an undergraduate student. He says, â€Å"You can’t get into medical school unless you’re well-roundedI made a bet with myself that I could get an A in the three hardest courses on campus† (Edson, 21.) When Jason reveals to Vivian that he got an A- in her course, it further clarifies the notion that Vivian was an extremely harsh and demanding professor. Vivian and Jason continue to have an interesting relationship throughout the play as we learn that Vivian is part of an extensive clinical trial that Jason is leading with his team. In essence, Vivian and Jason can be seen as each other’s opposites, at the same time as each other’s doubles. As discussed earlier, Vivian is an extremely ambitious professor who is strict and dismissive with her st udents. This is exemplified during a flashback scene, when Vivian refuses to grant a student’s extension request after their grandparent has passed away. She says, â€Å"Do what you will, but the paper is due when it is due† (Edson, 63.) We can see that Vivian believes in the rigidity of deadlines and in what she sees as the integrity of education. Similarly, Jason is completely engrossed with his clinical trial, and throughout their relationship in the play, we are exposed to an almost inhuman side of Jason. He says, â€Å"It [cancer] is awesome. How does it do it? The intercellular regulatory mechanisms†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Edson, 56.) We can see that Jason is passionate about cancer research, however, the fact that he describes cancer as â€Å"awesome† to his patient, while she is slowly withering away from the illness, is inconsiderate. Many of Jason’s monologues and lines are full of mindless tone and lack of emotion. He asks Vivian blanket, routine questions in a manner that his mentor has taught him and he fails to see the humans that he is harming through his work. When Vivian is taking her final breath, Jason desperately tries to resuscitate His relationship with Vivian is purely clinical in the same way that Vivian’s relationship with her students had been comprised of distant, dismissive, and disparag ing connections. The relationship between Vivian and Jason, along with the overlap between how they both view their work, is a critical component in the play because it gives Vivian a platform to reevaluate how she conducted herself as a scholar and a professor throughout her career. Another important relationship in the play is the strong connection formed between Vivian and her nurse, Susie Monahan. As discussed earlier, Vivian’s primary view of herself and Jason’s view of Vivian is purely transactional: Vivian sees herself as a worthy individual solely based on her accomplishments in life and nothing deeper than that, and Jason views Vivian as a research specimen. This makes Vivian’s relationship with Sally an inherently special relationship, one in which the readers finally see Vivian being treated like a human. Sally says, â€Å"There’s something we need to talk about, you need to think about† (Edson, 66.) Her endless dedication to Vivian, despite the circumstances of the clinical trial, shows Sally’s genuineness towards Vivian and her dedication to preserving Vivian’s integrity. Susie’s directness, combined with her deep disapproval of Jason’s decisions, displays how Sally was one of the only people in the play who was straightforward with Vivian and respectful of her as a human being. Sally’s relationship with Vivian had a profound impact on Vivian’s spiritual awakening at the end of the play. The juxtaposition of Sally’s character with Jason’s character directly affected Vivian’s illness experience. Vivian says, â€Å"At the same time the senior scholar, in her pathetic state as a simpering victim, wishes the young doctor would take more interest in personal contact† (Edson, 58). As Vivian reflected, she began to understand that a life of scholarly pursuits can ruin a person’s social and personal life. Through her experience with Sally and Professor Ashford, Vivian realized that she should have been kinder to her students as she finally took the time to understand the value of kindness during her debilitating treatments. Edson’s elaborate rhetoric and stream-of-consciousness writing in W;t serves as a powerful indicator that the illness experience is a byproduct of intrapersonal relationships within the play. The enchanting use of interior monologues gives readers an unparalleled view into the complexities surrounding a cancer patient’s journey from diagnosis through treatment and, in the case of Vivian, death. There are three types of euthanasia: voluntary euthanasia (euthanasia performed with the patient s consent), non-voluntary euthanasia (where the patient is unable to give their informed consent, for example child euthanasia), and involuntary euthanasia (which performed on a patient against their will). Euthanasia is illegal in all states except for Oregon, Vermont, Washington, New Mexico, and Montana. It is legal in the Netherlands and it is becoming increasingly popular so much so that other nations may soon follow suit. However, California is currently trying to lobby to pass a new law so euthanasia can be legal in that state. The idea of euthanasia is the right of a competent person with a terminal illness to avoid excruciating pain and have a timely and dignified death. Dramatic Techniques Essay Explore the Dramatic Techniques Used by J.B. Priestly in Act 3 of An Inspector Calls to Convey his Concerns and Ideas to the Audience, as well as Interest and Involve Them in his Play. What Does This Reveal About the Birling Family and Their Society?  J.B. Priestly has many concerns, but his main concerns whilst writing this play were to influence the public to take up a more socialistic approach to life. This was his concern because although the play was set in 1912, before the First World War, it was written in the 1940s after the two World Wars had taken place and he knew the outcome of the events that were mentioned during the play. For example, in Act 1, Birling says that the Titanic is unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable, but as we all know, the Titanic, which sailed about 18 months after this was said, sank near to eastern United States within transatlantic waters. Furthermore, the `Inspector` provides a key role in attempting to transform the Birlings from self-superiority, down to modesty and being humble. This effect eventually took place on some members of the family. After the first two acts, we, as the audience, have been left with many mind-boggling situations, such as:  Why was the `Inspectors` attitude the way it was?  Who did what? And why?  How did the `Inspector` know everything?  What has all this got to do with a girl committing suicide?  Priestly uses a lot of cliffhangers to good effect in his play to leave the audience in suspense and wondering what is going to happen. The `Inspector` deliberately questions the family in chronological order, and intentionally changes it when it is Erics turn, partly because he was under the influence of intoxicating liquor, but mainly because he knew that Erics mother, Mrs Birling, didnt know who he was talking about and that she would condemn him before realising that he was talking about her `perfect` son. This creates a lot of tension because, at the moment in time when Mrs Birling is being quizzed, Eric is out taking a stroll, allowing himself to sober up, before it is his turn. By this time, the audience have realised what is happening, thereby creating intense dramatic irony. Eric uses colloquialisms in his language to describe his relationship with Eva, for instance, instead of saying prostitute he says `the usual sort`, `squiffy` and `rather far gone` instead of drunk and `it` rather than saying sex. He does this because his actions have been unacceptable for a middle class man. Eva declines Erics offer of money towards the end of the relationship in a grateful manner, but Mrs Birlings evaluation of her in Act 2 when she says, She was giving herself ridiculous airs. She was claiming elaborate fine feelings and scruples that were simply absurd in a girl in her position. She said that the father was only a youngster silly and wild and drinking too much. There couldnt be any question of marrying him it would be wrong for them both. He had given her money but she didnt want to take any more money from him. All a lot of nonsense I didnt believe a word of it. was prejudiced, she did not like her, and from then on it was all one-sided and Eva could do nothing. This shows that Eva has the stronger sense of moral responsibility. Mr Birlings reaction, You must give me a list of those accounts. Ive got to cover this up as soon as I can. There is a lot of tension during the call about what the outcome would be, because if he was a fake, then Mr Birlings honour may not be in jeopardy, but if he was real, then they would all have to live with the guilt for the rest of their lives. Mr Birling was the most relieved person after the call. When the telephone rings a few minutes later, Mr Birling answers and his face drops. There is a lot of tension and suspense yet again during the call, Mr Birling pauses quite a few times to increase it dramatically. He puts the phone down and looks at everybody, then reveals the news. This raises questions for the audience and leaves them with a cliffhanger. The timing of the telephone call is important because it suddenly changes the mood from joyous to shocking and frightening. A second visit from an Inspector increases the suspense and shows that somebody still needs to be taught a lesson. This makes the audience feel stunned and makes them wonder if they should or should not sympathise with the family. The family would ensure that the course of events was different next time around. The playwrights message is still relevant today so we are able to see the differences between right and wrong, confession and rejection, guilt and innocence. It has been written to show the people of today and future generations how not to live, and to avoid unwanted circumstances during their life.
